How can I get the stink out of a new unworn Gap shirt?

I purchased a Gap shirt a few days ago that I love. The problem is this.. it STINKS like a fishy/oily smell. I thought I would be able to wash it out but it won’t go. I don’t wanna return it as I love the thing. I don’t want people thinking it’s ME that stinks and not my shirt.
I use All Free and Clear detergent, which is pretty mild. I tried Borax in the water and also a second round with White Vinegar. It’s one of those made in China cheapy shirts that are seriously over priced. Should I just return it and weep all the way home, or is there a trick to get this stink out?? I am thinking it’s the fabric itself, which is sort of a light canvas type material.. a linen type of thing. Smells just like Desetin Ointment if you have kids and know what that is . HELP!!

Try going back to the store and see if they can solve your problem. Let them get a good nosefull of the shirt, It’s possible they might exchange it for a less fragrant replacement shirt, or if they find all the shirts stink the same way, then there’s a problem. If they don’t take it back then try these: give the shirt a good spray with febreeze and hang it outside for a couple of days and see if that helps. You could also try an enzyme-based spray deodorizer such as “nature’s miracle” which is used to cover the odors left by incontinent pets. Washing soda is another old method for removing odors, and when combined with a detergent like Tide with febreeze, it should get most of the smell out. Pre-soak the shirt for several hours in a solution of washing soda and tide with febreeze, then wash in a normal machine cycle with the detergent. If that still doesn’t work, then my little book of laundry cures is out of ideas!
