How does the world cup draw work?
I’ve been reading about Australia’s chances in the world cup draw and in the articles they keep talking about ‘pots’. How do they work out the draw for the world cup? I’m assuming it’s not just drawn out of a hat and there is some kind of order for who goes in each group?
The 32 teams have been separated into four pots and one team from each pot will end up in each group.
The top 7 teams (Argentina, Brazil, England, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain) in the October 2009 world ranking and South Africa as the host are in Pot 1. The countries from Asia, Oceania, and North America are in pot 2. The remaining African and South American countries are in pot 3, and the rest of the European countries are in pot 4.
Teams will randomly be drawn from Pot 1 and placed in one of the 8 groups for the world cup. (South Africa is guaranteed to be in Group 1). Teams will then be randomly drawn from Pot 2 and placed in a group.
Pot 3 gets tricky. Europe has more than 8 teams in the tournament so inevitably some groups will have more than 1 european team but all the other continents can only have 1 in each group. The first 2 African teams drawn from Pot 3 will automatically go to the groups containing Argentina and Brazil from Pot 1, and the first south american team drawn will go to Group A with South Africa. This ensures that neither Africa or South America have more than 1 team in one group. The rest of Pot 3 will be drawn like Pots 1 and 2 were.
Teams will then be randomly drawn from Pot 4 to complete the groups.
